This week we are diving right into 2nd grade skills! In Spelling, we are looking at words with the short vowel sounds. Your child will be bringing home a Spelling list today. Each week, usually on Monday, we will do a pretest. If you child misses two or less on the test, they will receive a challenge list. On either list your child brings home, they will be expected to know all of the words by Friday. Friday is test day. Some words are more“challenging” than others, but we will be working a lot on them in class as well. Please help your child practice spelling these words at home.
This week we will be reading a story called “Iris and Walter.” It is about a little girl named Iris who moves to the country. It is a good story about being in a new place and making new friends-perfect for the beginning of a new school year! Our skill this week with this story is character and setting.
In Language, we are discussing complete and incomplete sentences. Our skill is to capitalize and punctuate sentences correctly.
In Math, we are focusing on addition and subtraction. Please practice the addition and subtraction facts at home. We will begin timed fact tests in the next couple of weeks. The quicker your child memorizes them, the better. We will be ready for our Ch.1 test on Friday. The study guide will go home on Wednesday, but will not be due back till Friday.
In Social Studies, we will be comparing and contrasting Rural and Urban communities.

We had a great first day yesterday! The students got to know me and the other students a little bit better. We went over the rules of the classroom, classroom procedures, have fun with M&M Math, and ended our day with popsicles.
I sent one packet home yesterday in their Take Home Folder. Students will be bringing the take home folder home everyday. There are some other important forms I will be sending home in their Wednesday folder. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me!
